Luke 7: 32 NKJV

We all do it! Shake our heads and whisper, "What is going on with this generation? What are they thinking?" All our bewildering questions only bring more inaction from the lost. Ignorance and arrogance clouds the mind of the rebellious soul. All the worldly entrapments tease their hedonistic mindset. Like children, the arrogant swirl with satanic excitement to a forbidden beat. Around and around the wicked waltz toward the fiery pit. Eat, drink, and be merry! Don’t worry about tomorrow! Like children, they lack wisdom and discernment. Around and around the wicked waltz to a satanic beat with no thought for tomorrow.

The Lord looks down from His heavenly throne this morning and shakes His head. It isn’t for lack of caring about the rebellious hearts. Their ignorance of His death brings tears to the King of Glory. Their arrogance shatters all future plans for their redemption. The Lord plays the flute calling the rebellious. But they didn’t hear Him. Will the arrogant hear this: "And the Lord said, "To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like?" His message never changes. But remember this, God will not always strive with us. Neither will he keep his anger forever. Listen, while you have a change to hear his message of redemption.

Guilded Cage

"But you, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts my head high."
Psalm 3: 3 NLT

If there is one thing that I desperately need, it is divine protection. Often, I walk, drive, and enjoy life without a thought of the enemy’s attacks. Without notice trouble hits my soul broadside. My enemy knows that I’m vulnerable without divine protection. How powerful is the LORD’s protection?

In the corner of my family room, Twitty sings. A metal cage surrounds this American songbird. Secure in his world, Twitty sings with joy. Without thought of harm, Twitty enjoys the gentle breezes from an open window. His life is secure and happy. Until, Patches and Tiger invaded his world of leisure. The natural instinct of a tabby cat is my feathered friend. It didn’t take long before Patches took a leap from the couch to the metal cage. Wham! Hit broadside by a flying cat, Twitty shook with fear. With a tasty meal on Patches’s mind, he climbs to the top of Twitty’s cage. Without notice Twitty’s world of leisure ended.

Even with Patches’ desire for Twitty, the metal cage fends off each attempt. Tiny paws can’t reach my feathered friend. Twitty understands that without this metal cage, he is lunch. Patches and Tiger, also, understand the need to hunt.

It doesn’t matter which cat attempts this feat, Twitty’s leisure world ended with my two new fury friends. So it is with my soul and Satan’s attempts to invade my leisure world. Without the LORD’s shield, I’m Satan’s lunch. It doesn’t matter how or when; a broadside attack is unavoidable. Knowledge of the Holy One results in understanding" Proverbs 9: 10 NLT

Your chair is waiting and your tea has been made. I can’t wait to hear from you. There will be laughter and tears. We will share many a moment you and I. Your first visit was so awkward and embarrassing. Even though you felt uncomfortable, I saw you as my child in whom I took great pleasure. The more often you come to sit in your chair by the window, the more you opened your heart. Only then did you begin to understand my heart towards you. There was nothing good that I would deny you – my child.

Now that you have grown, remember wisdom comes from many counselors. Good advise given by those who have experienced everything is worth more than gold. Do you still need some good advice? Your chair is waiting for you. My heart’s desire for you will never change. The desire to bring you good and joy to all of your life experiences. I, also, long to hear about your trials and triumphs. Romans 14: 10

The courtroom buzzed with excitement. The overhead fan swirled in the sweltering heat from a mid August heat wave. In the upper balcony, a young woman cried. How would her friend prove his innocence? Trembling with fear, Mary leaned forward to catch a final glimpse. So many accusers and so little evidence, how would he prove his innocence? Every eye focused on the judge’s door. "All rise, the Supreme Court is now in session."

Silence covered the room. A sterned faced judge glared at the accused. In his court, evidence speaks louder than words. No defense lawyer ever won without facts. The accused hung his head in shame. Would his actions prove loyal to the king of Kings? Witness after witness gave testified to his treasonous actions. Clearly the man was guilty. Where was his evidence proving his innocence? Trembling with fear, a shaky voice whispered, "Your honor, (gasp) look at my life. (Gasp) Find the evidence of my innocence from my good works." On that day, Mary’s friend stood alone. Would his life prove innocence or treason? "Bring his record before me!" the judge roared. Gasping with excitement, every eye focused on the screen above the judge’s head.

What finally proved the accused innocence? Was it circumstantial evidence or facts? Could you defend your loyalty to the king of Kings by your life? If not! I challenge you today to research your evidence. Look at your life for the facts not from shallow words. Your future judgement depends upon your evidence.

Copyright 2007 Patricia Charlton

Like Honey

"Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body."
Proverbs 16: 24 NLT

You determine your destiny. Are you happy and healthy? It may depend on your next sentence. Our words are powerful tools in the hands of our attitude. It isn’t easy controlling our responses with sick and cranky children. With laundry pilling up and unforeseen pressures from our whirlwind schedules - school, church, parent teacher meetings, and working outside the home. Would you like the secret to your spiritual and physical well being?

Try dipping your words in a honey solution. Honey has many purposes. Bees use it for food. You may use it as a sweeter to your cereal or tea. Honey changes the bitter taste of any food to a culinary delight. Kindly responses to harsh comments and critical actions produce honey sweetness in your soul. Those kind words change the flavor of that tense moment into an encouraging experience. Your honey dripping words reflect into the life of your children, husband, and friends. This practice removes the tension that produces unhealthy living and prolongs your life with happiness. You determine the quality of your day by your next response to a tense situation.

Why are harsh words so dangerous to our physical health? Our souls were made to commune with a gentle, merciful God. Verbal harshness directed at another demonstrates the opposite of gentleness. God always mixes correction with mercy. Humans have a tendency to mix correction with a superior attitude. We generally compare our standards of excellence with the behavior of others. If you practice verbal kindness, your soul overflows with sweet honey. Will your dip your words in a honey solution?

Copyright 2007 Patricia Charlton

Bowful of Pleasure

"Not that I speak in respect of wants: for I have learned, in whatever state I am, therefore to be content." Philipians 4: 11 NKJV

If a picture could write a thousand words, then Tiger wrote a novel. Tiger’s curiosity knew no limits. Often the Lord reminded my frazzled nerves that contentment is more than my circumstances. After many months of running the obstacle course down the hallway for a nocturnal visit to the only functioning bathroom, my secretive complaints took a toll on my spiritual life. Contentment was a fleeting memory. The Lord knew that I needed a visual lesson about contentment. That lesson finally arrived with the installation of my new toilet in the master bathroom.

With my partner in crime, Tiger, we removed the cardboard casing from the white toilet bowl. The puzzled look on Tiger’s face spoke volumes. The opportunity for a new adventure wetted Tiger’s appetite. With a leap he landed on the rim. After tip toeing around the rim, Tiger nestled into the bowl. I grabbed my digital camera for a snap shot that wrote volumes. Tiger’s ear to ear grin stated it all. "In whatever state Tiger found himself, he was content." My new toilet bowl became Tiger’s new bed. Every time I view that photo of contentment it slaps my spiritual face. Tiger understood contentment.

So, are you grumpy these days? Has the inconveniences of life ruined your contentment? May be all you need is a visual lesson that contentment involves trust from a loving master.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Square Peg

"Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands." II Timothy 1: 6 NKJV

Many events during this journey to the Promised Land shake the foundation of my faith. Those earthquakes of unfamiliarity stretch my faith muscles to the snapping point. My point of view about this journey with Christ often needs re-alignment with the truth of scripture. Familiarity with parents, friends, and church members trains my faith muscles to rely on my coping mechanism instead of Christ’s power. The round peg of faith nicely fit into the round hole of church programs, job, and social status. Until, the bottom fell out of my influential job.
The memory of the sold sign on my prestigious house in an influential neighborhood still brings tears to my eyes. But though this lesson still hurts Christ’s grace and mercy cover the hurtful memories. Even my tears and pleading cry for deliverance only develops an unsettling feeling of doom.

The square peg in a round hole experience didn’t stop at my job or house loss. NO! Things got much worse for my faith muscles. My free spirit and outspoken behavior slammed into a fundamental, conservative church’s agenda. Women were seen and not heard. The women of this congregation learn biblical truths in silence. Again the tears and cry for deliverance continued to bring that square peg in a round hole feeling. After many cries for help, the Holy Spirit whispers, "Will you serve me during your square peg experiences. Honey, this is about character building. So, hang in there."

My familiar feelings stood in the way of Christ developing the writer within this saint. After many hours searching for answers I wrote about my square peg experiences. My fast paced life and familiarity with my coping mechanisms hindered the work of grace hidden within my soul. Jesus knew I was born to write about His grace and mercy. It took my square peg experience with a round hole to serve Jesus with my God given talent. Spirit led writers need quietness and long hours of isolation.
Are you willing to let Christ remove the round peg of your faith from the round hole of familiarity? If so, I warn you, your life will change.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Defiance Personified

"Nor let us temp Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer."
I Corintians 10: 9 – 10 NKJV

Defiance comes in many forms. Ask a parent about a two-year-old that pushes the limit. A child’s natural curiosity lacks the wisdom to discern the difference between right and wrong. Except after many requests not to touch a certain object, a child learns quickly about a parent’s request. Several years ago, I watched a young guest in our house response to a request not to touch.

Jesse walked around the coffee table in my family room. Every few minutes, he looked at his mother. Back and forth, the stares between the son and mother still tempted Jessie to touch the glass vase on my coffee table. Slowly, slowly Jesse’s two-year-old hand reached towards my vase. Back and forth, back and forth, he stared at his mother and the glass vase. After the mother rose from her comfortable chair to address Jesse’s defiance, he withdrew his hand from the vase. Around the coffee table and back to the temptation, Jessie stared at his mother. Slowly, slowly Jesse’s hand reached for the glass vase. About a quarter of an inch from the vase, Jesse’s hand stopped. Even though Jesse didn’t touch the vase, his defiance accomplished the task. Even though the hand didn’t touch the glass, in defiance Jessie mind tempted his mother to react.

Often you and I skirt around a request to don’t touch. The closer we get to the temptation the more exciting is the conquest. Often in ignorance, you and I tempt Christ to react to our inward defiance. Jesse understood the message not to touch. He understood that tempting his mother to react disrupted her peace and joy. Defiance involves more than our actions. It involves our attitude. So, beware that you don’t tempt Christ to react to your defiant attitude.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Get The Lead Out

"For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their hearts and turn so that I should heal them."
Matthew 13: 15 NKJV

Several years ago, I moved to a new city. For seven years I scratched my head in bewilderment. There was something just not right about the inhabitants of this city. Whenever I ordered two to three different coffees at the local coffee shop, either the cream was missing or the artificial sugar. The clerk couldn’t handle two things at the same time without my repeated instructions. This incident happened with hamburger orders, gasoline, and just about everything. Clear thinking and purposeful actions never crossed the minds of most inhabitants of this city. So, was I nuts or had the world gone crazy? I was the square peg in a round hole. Was I judgmental? Or, something was definitely missing.

The city counsel decision to re-evaluate the infrastructure cleared a pathway to my observations about this unusual behavior. The inter-city streets needed repaving. Because of this study the counsel reported that ninety percent of the older homes had lead water pipes. There was my answer to my perplexing question. Exposure to lead over long periods of time dulled their minds. These people drank the city water. I drank battled water. I wasn’t judgmental afterall. Something was definitely wrong.

After pondering my question about lead in their pipes, the Holy Spirit tapped my shoulder. "Have you checked your spiritual pipes lately?" The warning from the Holy Spirit fell on open ears because I drank battled water from the river of life. Have you re-evaluated your spiritual infrastructure? Could there be lead in your spiritual pipes?

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

River of Words

"The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil." Proverbs 15: 28 NKJV

At one time or another, each of us faces a challenge of words. It could be a member of our unsaved family or a nasty neighbor bend on our demise. It could be a friend’s destructive criticism. Sooner or later, the conflict of words begins. The skin peeling comments pain our sensitive nature. The long-winded conversations about nothing eventual drag us down to a level of nasty words. The urge to retaliate teases our old nature. "Bring it on, baby! Bring it on!" screams into our spiritual ears. I warn you! Don’t go there with your adversary.

Once the river of words begins you breech the dam of common sense. So, how do you and I avoid this collision course with the river of nasty words? Have you studied your Bible this morning? You should! The answer to each and every situation with wickedness rests on the pages of your Bible. In Psalms we learn not to sit with scornful people. We also, learn about a soft answer turns away wrath. Even the encouragement to do good to our enemies should deter us from entering a river of words. If you and I search for Jesus Christ and His wisdom, our answers to nasty words reflects an attitude of grace and wisdom beyond our abilities. So, are you ready to study for your next encounter with your neighbor?

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Dancing With the Devil

"And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words."
Colosians 2: 5 NKJV

After many years of enticing offers and deceitful actions from "so called friends", I finally shock my head in wonderment. I knew better not to seek retribution from a harmful act. But the thoughts of revenge overpowered my sensibility and I took the bait – hook line and sinker. Revenge belongs to the LORD. But! Here was a chance of a lifetime – to get even with a former boss. The deliciousness of such actions floated through my daydreams. After all, many people don’t get mad but get even. So, what was the harm in enjoying a little pleasure in harming someone financially?

What caused all this venom? My former boss gave half of my best clients to his son. It took five years of crueling and persistence to finally build a client base with a substantial income. With one final decision, it was gone. The thoughts of starting all over again drove me to take action. I picked up the telephone and took the bait. My dance with the devil began.

My new employer’s reputation was less than stellar. This boss consistently lied, deceived, and tried every trick in the book to land a deal. But I knew this action would cause harm. After the trill of stealing or disrupting my former boss’s clientele, I came to my senses. My reputation of integrity and faithfulness was tarnished. If you dance with the devil long enough you pay the price. Take heed from my experience. Don’t dance with the devil. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." Matthew 6: 34 NKJV

Higher and higher the oil prices rise. The phone calls, the foreclosure letters, and a job lose all bring uncertainty about a prosperous future. Sooner or later, the worry trap ensnares you and me. The more we try to avoid that worry trap the more difficult it gets. It doesn’t take much to unnerve a stable situation.

Each day you and I face a new trial. Yesterday’s troubles end with the evening darkness. As the sun rises, a new adventure into the world of pressing situations looms closer with each moment. How often do you and I fret about future situations that never happen? Most of us do. The Lord says to you and me today, "Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." Take that truth to heart today. Christ knows all about trials.

So, forget about yesterday or tomorrow and brace yourself for today’s adventure. Commit this verse to memory. Take it with you wherever you go. When the trouble knocks on your door of opportunity, remind yourself that "sufficient" is today’s trouble. Don’t daydream about future trials. Only trust and obey the leading of the Holy Spirit to guide your steps through a hectic, hazardous, thrill of life time day. Then and only then can you and I avoid the worry trap.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Formula For Success

"He who does these things shall never be moved."
Psalm 15: 5 NKJV

We all think about it. Some of us frantically attend business meetings with no results. Others read, listen, and plan for an effective work and home life. Yet, each year the results are the same. That elusive prize – peace, contentment, and joy - scurries away into the fussy darkness of our ignorance. Each year you and I plan the perimeters of our annual spiritual and worldly success. But still no change in our behavior. Why not make next year different? Why not succeed? Are you ready for your challenge?

It is a simple formula - "He who walks righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart." Psalm 15: 2 NKJV. Did you catch the message? According to this verse you need to review your actions - walking, working, and speaking. Sounds so easy, right! So what does it take for you and I to succeed?

Proper perspective of God’s word imprinted on our everyday tasks releases grace and change in another. If your problem is anger, your formula involves verses about anger management. You need to memorize the verses about self-control. At that moment of explosive anger, those verses hold your verbal and physical reactions in check. Trust me it really works. At that moment, honesty and grace overshadows your tendency to fail.

Honesty is a trait few practice. In many situations it is easy to tell a little white lie and cover our backsides. Don’t believe that lie. Success is for everyone who understands and practices the truth about our negative actions. We often fail because of ignorance. Within the pages of the Bible are the treasures waiting for you and I to discover. The formula for our success in this life is available for all to understand and practice. So, this year read you Bible instead of a self-help tape. Attend a Bible study class instead of a business a conference. Watch and wait for God to honor

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Board of Education

"No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening – it is painful!" Hebrews 12: 11 NLT

Within us is the ability to get off the beaten track. During those times God tries to get our attention. He whispers and waits - no answer. He screams, "Look out!" – no answer. Heading towards us is a speeding car full of sin. If we don’t stop and listen, the sin knocks us out of God’s fellowship. Sometimes in life, the only way to get our attention is a kick in the pants. Pain gets our attention. The one thing about correction is this: it hurts. We all remember from our childhood the many encounters with the board of education upon the seat of knowledge. Correction is necessary for maturity. Without God’s intervention, we harm the ones we love. Some of us remember not to touch a red-hot stove burner because it burns.

Don’t misunderstand me, correction is not evil. Afterwards we understand that our rude and rebellious behavior is unacceptable. God also uses difficult circumstances to grab our attention. During painful situations, there are two things to consider. Firstly, is God correcting an out of control action or attitude? Search the scriptures and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Secondly, God is testing your faith. Tests bring out the best and worst in us all.

Pride is revealed through criticism. There is nothing worst than pride to attract God’s corrective attention. God hates all pride. However, God loves humility. If we accept constructive criticism, we grow in spiritual maturity.

God’s purpose for our correction is the character of Christ. If God allows pride and rebellious actions to continue in our lives, Christ is shamed. We train our dogs and cats to obey us. Wild horses undergo corrective behavior in order to run in races. So, why is it wrong for God to correct our actions with pain?

What is God trying to tell you through your difficult circumstances? Are you available for His corrective work during this week? If so, prepare yourself for some corrective work from the Holy Spirit.

Twisted Sister

"Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before my face." Psalm 5: 8 NKJV

If you want to deceive your enemy, you don’t openly display your tricks of your deceptive trade. With persuasive actions and crafty speech, your enemy – Satan and his band of wicked angels – lures you and me into a game of "let’s go up the bunny trails." He may deceive you with flattering comments to induce pride or insult your pet belief – causing division. Whatever tactic works Satan tries.

If you want to hinder your enemy from obtaining their goal, you innocently lure your opponent off course. With a straight path ahead, you easily view the obstacles that hinder your progress. On a twisted path, your enemy has an advantage of surprise. Also, have you ever taken a detour through unknown country with winding roads? After several miles and hours later you discover that you are hopelessly lost.

God desires that you and me understand the crafty tactics that snag us without warning. Little by little, the temptation to take one more step off course sends us farther and farther away from God’s goal for you and me. Satan knows that if we look straight ahead at Jesus, Satan loses the deceptive game. Remember deception is as old as the Garden of Eden. Even Satan tempted Jesus with the deceptive game of "let’s go up the bunny trails." I warn you, keep your eyes focused on Jesus, and pray from a straight path this day. Only a straight path defeats your enemy and deceptive tactics. Today, ask the Lord for wisdom and discernment regarding the straight course of action.

Prove It!

"And prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." Malachi 3: 10 NKJV

I love blessings. Especially the press down, rolling over kind. However, I often fail to understand just how great is the Lord God’s storehouse. With the stock markets fluttering in the financial breeze, the financial astute investor quakes with uncertainty. Even real estate agents scramble to turn a profit in a sliding housing market. Homeowner groan with overbearing mortgages payments. Everyone screams to God, "Prove it!" Prove that your promises work during uncertain financial times.

If you are looking for a challenge during this financial slump, pick up your Bible. Your divine challenge awaits your response. The LORD God fully understands financial hardships. Jesus Christ whispers to you and me this morning, "Prove me!" Take my method and watch. See if I won’t put food on your table. Christ is bigger than your financial shortfall.

What is the key that turns the lock to God’s storehouse? Malachi mentions the fruit of your labors. If you crave the heavenly blessings, bring your tithe into God’s house. Don’t forget to give an offering to support kingdom business! It may be foolishness to the worldly mind but the LORD of hosts says, "Prove me." All your future financial security rests upon your response to the next request from a missionary or a church project. Will you give in order to receive? Remember that Christ whispers into your spiritual ear, "Prove me!"

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Sophisticated Donkeys

"Then the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you…." Especially when the odds are against me. Before entering a sales career I was told women never make it in the electrical business. Even though few women tried, some made it. I figured if a man could sale electrical fixtures and lights, so could I. YES! I paid my dues before entering a respectful position. From caustic remarks to demeaning jobs – order desk, customer service, technical backup, telemarketing - I studied, fought, and trained myself. With each new job interview, my courage grew. If you want to break into a male dominated field you need some intestinal fortitude and a willingness to stretch your abilities to the maximum. Also, a good sense of humor lightens the load.

Sometimes in this spiritual life good things happen because we fight for the right cause. Often we need some spiritual intestinal fortitude to overcome the obstacles that Satan hurdles in your pathway to divine success. The world and the devil’s crowd scream at you, "You can’t do that!" But, God says something different. After all the struggles and skinned spiritual knees, remember the final solution to your battle with the world results in this – be strong. A spiritual enhanced fighting spirit involves two things – strength in the Lord and the power of His might. God loves warriors. After all my struggles, I reached the finish line - a fight for the right to sale electrical fixtures and play with the big boys. Sometimes in this life you just need to fight for the right cause.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

If The Walls Could Talk

"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather expose them."
Ephesians 5: 11 NKJV

Over the top of my stove hung a dangerous situation. For fifteen years this exhaust fan operated with efficiency and quietness. The former owners of my house failed to maintain this fan. The danger within the walls eluded the former homeowner. Each time I used that fan closer and closer the danger came. My uneasiness overshadowed each task. If only the walls could talk, what would the warning be? Something wasn’t correct about that fan.

It wasn’t the walls that forewarned us about a dangerous exhaust fan. The fan echoed with newly hatched sparrows. A family of sparrows discovered the warmth and security of my exhaust piping. But, that wasn’t the problem. The wall screamed a warning. It tried to forewarn each owner but none heard the warning.

It took a kitchen renovation to finally focus our attention about that hidden danger. My husband and I debated about replacing that fan with an above the stove microwave. Now, the wall screamed, "Yes, replace that fan." We finally heard the warning from the wall. After removing the old fan, the light finally dawned on the hazard. There it was the shorted electrical wires. The electrical installers missed a vital part during the installation of the range hood. The wire shorted many times leaving a tell tale brown mark on the drywall.

If the walls of our soul could talk, what would the warning be? Within many a soul a danger lurks. Listen and heed the message that your soul screams. Crack open the locked doors to your hidden agenda and pet sins. Expose the shorted wires of darkness in your spiritual life.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Living Hope

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." I Peter 1: 3 NKJV

Yesterday the weight from burdens and various frustrating circumstances snapped my joy. The thought of driving my car off the cliff left an appealing impression upon my sensitive emotions. From a maxed out schedule to energy sapping relationships, my abundant life flew away upon the back of Satan’s attacks.

Life often throws you and me a curve ball. Something unexpected slammed into your future plans. It may be a foreclosure on your house, a death in the family or a job loss. But don’t despair! A satanic attack is powerless compared to this promise: "according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope…." No matter what, a living hope resides in the heart of each and every child of God. On the wings of hope you and I float over our storms. We rise above our self- imposed schedules. Why? Jesus rose from death so that all our skin pealing moments, heart-wrenching experiences or earth-shattering failures never overwhelm the resurrection power of Jesus Christ. The exceeding greatness of Christ’s power permeates our future plans. Jesus Christ is greater than any satanic attack. So, the next time an earth-shattering failure or a skin pealing comment saps your joy, remember this: Don’t despair. Practice your living hope in Christ Jesus. Shout to the satanic attack the above verse and watch your enemy squirm into the darkness.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Sophisticated Donkeys

"Then the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you…." So, which one are you this morning, a keen spiritual sensed sophisticated donkey or a spiritual dimwitted servant?

Listen Up, People!

"Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time." I Peter 5: 6 NKJV

Our media, institution, and even some parents instruct their children about high and lofty positions. The human tendency to exalt those achieving great things cloaks a truth about mankind’s greatness. The brightest and the best are not the greatest achievers in the spiritual world. The door to spiritual greatness hangs on one truth – HUMILITY.

Because of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, mankind inherited a prideful nature. The elusive nature of spiritual pride hinders the work of the Holy Spirit by veiling our view from future kingdom projects. That is our problem, we often fail to understand or hear the divine instruction – humble yourself before a mighty God. For thousands of years God whispered about humanities downfall – pride. What is humanities response – silence and disobedience?

Time to listen up, people! Don’t miss the message to your soul! The simple truth includes "Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 18: 4 The least of us – children, Christ considers the greatest in his kingdom. Why! Because before honor comes humility. The pressure to achieve great things rests on our unwillingness to lower ourselves before Christ. Are you ready for a challenge? Then ask the LORD to humble you and watch the fireworks.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Splitting Rocks

"And the graves were opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many." Matthew 27: 52, 53 NKJV

With power grids maxed to their limit and the grinding wheels of over worked power generators, were is our power. The natural world craves more power. Our lives, homes, and work depend upon the continuous supply of power. So it is in our spiritual lives.

How powerful is Christ’s resurrection? Is it powerful enough to raise your dead dreams? Can your wayward children return to the correct path of righteousness? If in doubt, consider this: "and the graves were opened and many….". Can the worldly opinions and scholarly teaching raise the spiritually dead? When Christ died the natural world quaked and the rocks split. Nothing can or will sap the resurrection power from Christ.

Just about everyone knows the cross but few understand this awe-inspiring verse. For many years I read the account of Christ’s death but missed this jewel. God didn’t forget his own. Resurrection power knows no limits. It transcends your trials, heartaches, and dead dreams. Come! Let Christ raise your life. Walk through the city and astound many gnaw says. Because you asked Christ into your broken dreams and shattered life. My windows rattled with the sound of crashing trees. The sixty-mile an hour wind snapped more than trees. Only the most powerful could resist the constant bending and twisting motion. Unfortunately, power lines often snap with the weight of century old trees.

With the morning light shining in my bedroom window, I stumbled out of bed. That fleeting thought of a warm cup of tea drove my weak legs. Step by step the blurry vision of downward steps forced my feeble legs onward. With the kitchen counter in view, I grabbed the electrical cord for the kettle. Now, where was that recepticle? After rubbing my eyes several times, I finally saw the problem recepticle. I forced the plug into the outlet and waited. Nothing happened. Where was my power? I snatched the plug out of outlet and tried again. Again, nothing happened. I stumble down the basement stairs to the fuse box. Maybe I’ve blown a fuse. My problem wasn’t a blown fuse but a disconnected power line.

The weak power line was no match for nature’s mighty wind. Neither was my weak spiritual life no match for Satan’s fiery darts. Instead of constantly fumbling in the spiritual darkness, I needed a strong power source. Jesus stated that my power source was the Holy Ghost. My reliance upon natural sources snapped everytime the mighty wind of Satan’s tactics ripped through my soul.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Running The Race

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witness to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us."
Hebrews 12: 1 NLT

For diet conscious saints the thought of shedding a few pounds by running a race overwhelms our physical endurance. If you are I, my mid-section hinders my progress. Physical exertion brings panic and despair. I don’t know where to begin. Unlike a runner, I’m not prepared to run. My mind, will, and emotions are out of focus with my desire to shed a few pounds. I fail to understand that endurance comes by practice. This race to shed my poundage begins with an understanding that without painful moments, my excess weight stays put. I need preparation in order to accomplish my goal.

The first place that I prepared was my spiritual life. According to the above verse, we all have a hindrance. Something or attitude that easily blocks our development towards the completion of our race. Everyone soon or later faces a crowd of witnesses. Sooner or later, our faith muscles feel the tension from spiritual fatigue. It maybe the loss of a home, job or a death in your family that blocked your path to victory. At that moment, what are you prepared to do about your hindrance? God desires that you and I remove all hindrances and run to win. Always, remember that a huge crowd in glory watches and cheers your progress. So, shed a few spiritual pounds. Run your race with endurance and claim your reward.

Copyright 2007 Patricia Charlton

Two Fury Friends

"He does not ignore those who cry to him for help." Psalm 9: 12 NLT

There are times in my life that I chose to ignore the obvious. It could be a phone call from a frustrating friend or a wrap on my front door. It won’t matter what or who disturbs my tranquility. My peace was more important then answering others needs until two fury friends entered our house.

These two little friends couldn’t be ignored. Patches and Tiger, two male tabby kittens, needed feeding, watering, and house training. It didn’t matter what time of the day or night, they cried for my assistance. I often ignored their cries. I choose to ignore the obvious. So, Patches and Tiger decided to train me. It took a wet nose in my face at four a.m. or nipping at my exposed fingers or toes often get my attention. If that didn’t work, the echoing sound of an over turned foot dish snapped me back to the obvious - feeding time at the ranch. It was feed me and feed me now.

Patches and Tiger taught me a truth about my ignorant actions. My inaction affects others. The fragrance filled our car with pleasure and anticipation of our life together. My heart melted with the demonstration of his love. Because of my husband’s disfunctional family background, I rarely heard "I love you" from his lips. Yet his giving heart expressed itself in a sweet heart rose. Through all the difficult experiences of our marriage, I remembered those sweet heart roses – tokens of his love. I loved the fragrance from roses. Their aroma lingered through all the years.

Just like my husband’s caring expression, God had a rose – the rose of Sharon for you and for me. Its fragrance would touch your heart. It was free to all that needed an expression of love. This rose of Sharon occupied a special place in God’s heart. God only had one rose. By giving this rose to you and me, God felt the pain of lost - the sting from a ring of thorns and the crushing of His rose. The lingering aroma from His rose of Sharon touched many hearts. That is why God gave to all lonely, hurting hearts His expression of love. The most amazing thing about love – it is reciprocal. The rose of Sharon returned in our hearts to God’s heavenly vase.

This Valentine’s Day, do you need a touch from God’s sweet heart rose? Psalm 16: 11 NLT

There is a pathway leading to a treasure chest of delights - overflowing with peace, joy, and contentment. Also, in this treasure chest is a book. This book contains a truth about a peaceful relationship. This morning, are you looking for peace? Has the bubble of your peaceful illusion burst? There is a pathway leading to your special place.

Have you found this pathway to your serene, secure hide away? A place to exchange your tension headaches and tight shoulders for a relaxing get away. Do you disparately need this peace? This peace doesn’t come in a bottle nor a pill, but from one relationship. Come! Come find your pathway to your secret getaway. Your peace longs to embrace the tension and disappointments.

Take your example from Jesus, who often got away from the pressures of training, teaching and healing to listen in his secluded getaway. In that place, Christ exchanged the tension for the joy of fatherly fellowship and direction. In the stillness, the voice of heaven encouraged, enlightened, and enjoyed His son. This morning, are you longing for this type of peaceful relationship? Then go find your secret place known only to you and God? In your place, your soul learns about quietness. The quietness in your place, blocks out the cares, joys, disappointments, and worldly delights. You open the treasure chest of God’s word and out pops the joy, peace, and contentment. May His face shine with favor upon us."
Psalm 67: 1 NLT

The sun – a cauldron of plasmic energy – flashes solar power into the cosmic universe. Into this universe, light travels and reflects off the moon and stars by night. Without this reflective light mankind walks in darkness. God’s favor towards all nature and mankind is the sun. Without the sun’s reflective light, all life on earth parishes. Plants need light for growth. Reflective light warms our bodies and tans our skin. We need sunlight.

In this world of dwindling resources and high-energy bills, we need an alternate source of power. Every day this source shines into our world. Solar power is free to all. If you have a solar panel you receive this energy.

This verse mentions the favor of God and His mercy. In the spiritual world, there is another sun called Jesus. He is God’s favor to those who walk in darkness. He warms the coldness of a sinful heart and renews life within a dead soul. Spiritual light needs a receptacle to reflect live giving energy to the spiritual universe. God needs a face to shine into the darkness.

God made the face of man to reflect spiritual solar energy. God’s face shines with love, mercy, and grace. He is a consuming fire. Reflective light bounding off a mirror ignites dry wood or dead grass. Do you know someone who is dead spiritually? Than turn your face towards Jesus. Do you know someone who needs a spark to delight his or her spiritual fire? Turn your face towards Jesus. God needs your face.

Each morning turn your face in prayer towards Jesus and ask for God’s favor. In return your neighbor, family, and enemies receive the reflective light from God’s merciful face.

Copyright 2006 Patricia Charlton

Reflections

"As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the person."
Proverbs 27: 19 NLT

Water, it is cool and refreshing to someone who is thirsty. It, also, has the ability to reflect the inner need of a person’s heart. Everytime you and I look into a pond, stream, or river, the face that everyone views reflects off the surface. Water doesn’t lie. That reflection accurately demonstrates whether we are sad, happy, bitter, or gracious. The facial lines, wrinkles, and beauty spots jump back at us. Water can’t change the image to suit our imagination or desires.
Just like the reflection on the water, our hearts demonstrate to the world our heartfelt need. A bitter heart reflects a need to forgive an erroring partner, friend, or spouse. Because of that bitterness, the ugly image reflecting on our face destroys all hope of reconciliation. A merry heart free of anger, bitterness, envy, or jealousy portrays an image of love, friendship, and forgiveness. With a heart bursting with God’s love, our faces shine with God’s glory.

If you desire to change your reflected image, then change your heart. For your heart reflects your inner desires, code of conduct, and your relationships. Love, joy, peace, and good will to all people attract the needy, friendly, and hurting. People seek the company of gracious companions. Only a face mirroring the image of God’s love, peace, and forgiveness to all mankind can change the world around us. Only a perfect image reflected from the face of Jesus Christ can shine from our hearts to the hurting world around us. The problem with you and I this morning, will we exchange our empty hearts for the heart of Jesus Christ?

Copyright 2007 Patricia Charlton

Pathway to Enlightenment

Everywhere we turn today, someone or something grabs our attention with a promise of a fulfilling life. A life involving peace, contentment, and joy. But, where do you and I find such fulfillment? The new age point of view claims that God is within. That you and I dictate the pathway of each and everyday. To a new age mentality, the human mind is the stepping stone to a fantasy pathway to tranquility. But, is that the truth? Is self the doorway onto your pathway of enlightenment?

Before you decide, consider that law framework everything in nature. Gravity ensures that objects remain on earth. Police enforce rules that dictate the behavior of humanity. The pattern of seasonal change never falters. So it is with the spiritual world. Before mankind entered this earth, God enforced Four Spiritual Laws for humanities enlightenment. These laws ensure that peace, contentment, and joy remains upon this earth.

The gateway to your enlightenment begins with these laws.

Law One: God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life. Don’t believe the lie that our minds dictate our actions. It can’t! Only God knows the future. Only God understands the true nature of mankind.

Law Two: Man is sinful and separated from God. Mankind cannot know or experience the divine love and future pathway of each individual. From the Garden of Eden to the modern day jungle, man’s thoughts are evil. Go to any street corner and watch the behavior of street gangs. Observe the behavior of your children. Children never receive teaching on devious actions. It comes naturally. For "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." (Romans 3: 23) With each action, it influences the outcome of our future. God demands a payment or toil for each infraction of his spiritual laws. What is the payment? "The wages (payment) of sin (infraction) is death (spiritual separation from God)." (Romans 6: 23) A dark valley separates the wayward from the pathway to their enlightenment. A dense fog of confusion hinders the weary traveler from the goal of peace and joy. Many a heavy burdened sojourner deviates from their pathway. Be careful! Consider the fact that your broken spiritual laws cloud your entrance. Stop! Rest! Consider the law.

Law Three: Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sin. Your bridge over the dense dark valley of confusion is Jesus Christ. Because "God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners (transgressors), Christ died for us." (Romans 5: 8) If you are banking on your own goodness to bridge the gap between you and darkness, think again. These spiritual laws are binding in the High Court of Appeal. None have broken the law and entered the gates of enlightenment. "Jesus said to him (and you and me), I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." (John 14: 6) Believe it or not, this is the law. Ignorance is not a defense.

Law Four: We must individually receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Then we can know and experience divine love and direction.
The fog slowly lifts from your eyes and the gate swings open. Will you act? The choice is yours. Chose this day who you will follow – self or Jesus Christ. The outcome means the difference between spiritual enlightenment or spiritual darkness. But don’t wait too long. The gate stays open for a short time. Remember you must receive Jesus Christ and live before entering the realm of spiritual enlightenment.

Copyright 2008 Patricia Charlton

Wind Under Your Wings

"And so we keep on praying for you, that our God will make you worthy of the life to which he called you." II Thessalonians 1: 11 NLT

Since I need a lot of prayer to continue on this quest for spiritual perfection, I love this verse. The prayers from other saints add wind under my spiritual wings. Many times, I felt those prayers upholding my sagging arms. Without those prayers, I could have stumbled back into an old destructive habit. Prayer is a powerful action fulfilling God’s purpose for us all.

Like the Thessalonians, I too keep on praying for others. I know that life is worth living in Christ’s power. From previous experiences, I comprehend that saints layed on my heart by the Holy Spirit were chosen for a kingly purpose.

During your journey through this day, if you sense a tugging on your heart about someone special- stop, listen, and pray. By your prayers, that chosen saint could conqueror a destructive habit or soar to new spiritual heights. Powerful kingly conquests require powerful prayers.
Prayer is a weapon that changes things. Do your children, husband, or boss need a little lifting up today? Are your children wondering off course from God’s chosen path? PRAY! The power for a worthy kingly life is Prayer. Today, start adding some wind under someone’s wings and pray in the name of Jesus for their victory. In return, someone prays for your wind under your wings. Personally, I envision a tornado like wind uplifting all saints into new kingly conquests – a life worth living in Christ’s power.

Copyright 2007 Patricia Charlton

Wings Like An Eagle

But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles (Isaiah 40: 31)

Majestically the eagle perches on the evergreen branch. Slowly, its eyes survey the landscape looking for food. As a bird of prey, an eagle is ready to hunt. Suddenly, the evergreen branch shakes. The eagle spreads its wings and launches into the air. Flapping and flapping its wings, the eagle flies towards the dark clouds. Under those clouds is an updraft needed for soaring. The equal pressure under its wings and the pressure above: caused by the downdraft produces the lift necessary for flight. God designs the eagle wings for soaring. With outstretched wings, the eagle floats on he updraft to higher and higher heights. This eagle is never exhausted or weak from soaring.

Unlike this eagle, the trials of my life exhausted my energy and desire to conquer. I needed to learn to soar like that eagle. In search of an answer to my spiritual exhaustion, I read this answer that God gave to Jeremiah: "Behold, one shall fly like an eagle, and spread this wings over Moab." (Jeremiah 48: 40) Just spread your spiritual wings and fly over your problem, could it be that simple? Perhaps!

Continuing on my search, I read the question that God asked Job regarding eagles. "Does the eagle mount up at your command, and make its nest on high?" (Job 39: 27) God controlled every animal, person and situation in my life (even the trials).

Still, no closer to my answer, I thought about this: "But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength." What does it mean to "wait" on the Lord? The "wait" in this verse meant to wait on or upon (something or someone).

Before the eagle launched into flight, it waited on the branches. It also, waited for the arrival of the wind. Once the eagle had flown to the clouds, its wings stopped flapping. The bird of prey placed itself upon the wind current and rested. There is my answer to renewing my spiritual strength. The next time a trial enters your life become one of God’s little eagles and rest upon His strength. You can soar on the wind current higher and higher to new spiritual heights.

Morning Person

"Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord." Psalm 5: 3 NLT

God is a morning person. For some of us, the morning is a time for sleep. We drag our tired, half-asleep bodies out of bed. The farthest thing from our minds is an encounter with God. Only the aroma from a freshly brewed coffee stimulates our bodies to move. Like a zombie we follow our noses towards the source. After an eye-opening encounter with our coffee mugs we are ready to meet God. Are you like me? Every morning you drag your body out of bed.

The problem with night owls is staying alert for the morning person. Since God is a morning person, you night owls better prepare yourself for the next early morning encounter with Jesus. If you don’t think that alertness is important, then think again. How will you feel if at the next business or parent teacher meeting, the person across the table was half-asleep? If you are not alert to that person’s needs, desires and answers, how can you intelligently handle the encounter?

Wanting God to hear our voice in the morning requires that we are available to hear His answer. The next part to this verse mentions your requests. We all have things that God can and will do for us. Gaining His approval may depend on how we handle His answers. There are times that God requires that you wait expectantly for your answer. If you and I are half-asleep we may miss an all-important answer to our pressing situations. God is alert to our needs and desires. Are you alert to God’s need for meaningful fellowship?

There are benefits to meeting in the morning. Firstly, the desires, needs, and questions are fresh on your mind. Secondly, you have the whole day for God to answer your request. A whole day of listening, watching and imagining God’s answer. Waiting is not such a bad thing but an experience with an all-powerful God.

The simple truth to your next early morning encounters with Jesus - wake up and smell the coffee.

Copyright 2006 Patricia Charlton

Your Secret Place

"You will show me the way off life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever." Psalm 16: 11 NLT

Embracing the joyful pleasures, you exchange your worldly cares for a heavenly fellowship.

Your peace and heavenly pleasures wait for you to find and enjoy in your secret place. So, go now and find your serene, secure, hide away and embrace all the heavenly pleasures. Truly, no cruise or cabin by the lake can replace your serene special place.

Copyright 2006 Patricia Charlton

Highway To Paradise

"And make straight paths for your feet," Hebrews 12: 13 NKJV

A gentle breeze rustles the deciduous trees whispering into the wind, "Come follow me!" The invitation stirs your soul to follow your dreams. But, the roadway is twisted. Your fear of the unknown hinders your progress. Even though the road is smooth, the curves hide a fear of success. This day you must decide to follow this pathway despite your fears. Again, the trees whisper another message, "Fear not I’m with you."

You begin and end this journey with one step into the cool tree lined pathway. Step after step, straight down the center of this pathway. Keep following the yellow line to your dreams. Step upon step; look at the yellow line. Each step towards your dream depends on you. This day you must decide to follow the straight line to your paradise of dreams.

Only the Holy Spirit guides any would be traveler down this road. Curves bring out the best in every traveler. By listening to the gentle voice of the spirit, your fear melts away with each step. The dream-make whispers – a keeper of your soul. Fear not! Take your first step! Look for your dream. It awaits you.

Hear the voice of the wind whisper this: "Commit your way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. John 7: 37, 38

Oh! How we all need a cup of cool, refreshing water? Especially, when the day is arid and our throat is parched. Our bodies scream for this refreshment. Oh, where does a dry shrivel soul go to receive life-giving water? This verse suggests that the answer is closer then you think. That the answer maybe in my back yard.

In the back corner of my garden sits a three-tiered fountain. Gushing, bubbling and cascading water with a never-ending flow of crystal clear water provides comfort and refreshment to the robins and bees from the summer heat. In the noonday sun, the heat radiating from the walkway stones burns the souls of my shoes. Sweat pours down my forehead dripping onto my shirt. I stare at my fountain thinking about this: "out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." How does one become a fountain of living water to others? What I need is guidance from the still small voice.

There it is again, that still small voice: "Look at your fountainhead!" What is special about that fountainhead? From the inmost parts of my fountain, crystal clear water gushes upwards towards that fountainhead. Out of each hole, water escapes. If the hole is plugged, water remains within the fountain. Only a cleaning of the head relieves the tension from the gushing water. There it is again that tugging at my heart. Is your soul fountainhead clear of all debris? Others need to refresh their shrivel up soul at your inner fountain. Jesus longs to make my inner soul a fountain of His grace to others. Fulfilling the scripture, which says: "(Patricia) who believes in Me (Jesus), out of (Patricia’s) heart will flow rivers of living water." How is your soul a fountainhead today? Will you allow Christ to overflow His grace to others through your heart?

Copyright 2006 Patricia Charlton
